Huge success for Ilha Verde’s 11th International Luso-Brasileiro Auction that welcomed many foreign buyers
São Paulo, May 11, 2008: – The 11th International Luso-Brasileiro Auction that took place on Saturday, May 10 provided a unique opportunity for Brazilian, as well as an increasing number of foreign buyers to acquire well-trained sport horses, broodmares and young stock from some of the world’s most coveted Lusitano bloodlines. Enthusiastically hosted by Ilha Verde proprietor Victor Oliva, and televised by Canal Rural, the auction is also a popular event on the São Paolo social calendar and is always supported by a wealth of celebrities and high profile sponsors, including Volkswagen.
On this occasion, preceding the horse auction, a range of donated designer fashions went under the hammer, suitably modeled by riders and other sports personalities, with the proceeds going to the Barretos Cancer Hospital. Magnanimously encouraged by Oliva’s wife, Tatiana, and prompted by the good cause, there was some spirited bidding, with cocktail outfits changing hands for between R$6,000 and R$7,000.
The serious business of selling horses opened with an offering of 30 coverings by the highly recommended grey stallion Violino that were quickly sold. Violino is a son of Veiga stud farm’s legendary sire Ofensor, out of Querida, a Sociedade das Silveiras mare and daughter of the famous Invulgar.
As usual, for two days prior to the auction, prospective buyers took the welcome opportunity to try the riding horses under saddle, and also consult health reports and x-rays that had been usefully prepared in advance by Ilha Verde veterinarian Dr. Neimar V. Roncati.
The top price of 2008 was R$120,000 paid for one of the predicted highlights of this auction, the beautiful black mare, Africa VO. A daughter of Sol VO and out of Montero, a Visquiero daughter, Africa already has a proven track record, with gold medals from various Festivals, and demonstrated stunning paces.
The five-year-old steel grey Zatar VO topped the stallion price list at R$100,000 and will continue the dressage career for which he is already showing exceptional potential. He is also by Sol VO and out of an Afiançado de Flandes mare, Pimenta do Top.
At past auctions, a number of Donaire sons – especially buckskins and palominos – have popularly been sold to buyers from the United States, and this occasion was no exception. A stunning dark palomino stallion with silver mane and tail went under the hammer for R$64,000 to Linda Graham from Magnolia, Texas. Amuleto VO’s brother, Ultraje VO is, in fact, already being ridden in California by well-known trainer Dominique Barbier who also attended the auction. Amuleto is out of Ordenado do Top (Babel).
With the auction successfully concluded, all eyes at Ilha Verde are turning towards Hong Kong, where stable jockey Rogério “Roger” Clementino will be competing for the Brazilian dressage team under the saddle of Nilo VO. Clementino travels to Europe this week in order to train and prepare under the watchful eye of Johann Zagers.
